It's a photo of the sun with a protruberance - at least that is what I think they are called! The sun occasionally flings out these large arcs of fire into space.
The reason I made it is that you could call it a 'firechild' - which is what one of the characters, a fire elemental, in Diane Duane's Door Into Books sometimes gets referred to by the others.
