Back home

We got home earlier on today and had a fairly event free trip. We've already been shopping for some food for today and tomorrow. We have also unpacked. I have a mountain of laundry to do and it's cold in the house, but it's nice to be back.

My parents set off for Germany again this morning. We've had a nice week and got quite a few things done around house and garden.

I am now behind with almost everything else, including lj reading.

But hey, instead of catching up, the Marquis and I are going to visit Third and Chairman tonight, to go to the Re-enactors' Fair tomorrow.

Work on Sunday.

Oxonmoot ~ The Report (Second attempt)

I have been very busy with my portfolio of which more at another point and so haven’t got round to doing the report thing until now. But since I want a break from learning and teaching and not being able to find the references that I want to find, here’s my Oxonmoot report instead.

Oxonmoot

Finally made it back from Oxonmoot at about 20.45 last night, instead of 19.45 as originally hoped.

Weekend was enjoyable despite the fact that I seem to have spent most of it in accident-prone land.

'twas nice to see the Usual Suspects: [livejournal.com profile] pellegrina, [livejournal.com profile] foradan, [livejournal.com profile] emperor, and various Taruithornians (including [livejournal.com profile] dreiviertel, and CTS people, and SocT people. Also met [livejournal.com profile] megamole and [livejournal.com profile] atreic who I'd only known via lj up to that point.

After Enyalie we also caught up with [livejournal.com profile] alitophilus, [livejournal.com profile] jane_somebody, [livejournal.com profile] skordh, and [livejournal.com profile] parrot_knight.

Before I get carried away and write a longer report, however, I am going to do some work on my portfolio...

Got back from the Fellowship Festival earlier today. Very tired... Trains were delayed as usual.

Tomorrow my new job starts, and the Marquis is off until Friday to work back up north. :-( I shall miss him.

Thursday [livejournal.com profile] tuemi arrives with friend for a visit.

Busy time clearly not over yet, but I shall endeavour to start filling in some gaps soon.

After work on Mondays, the Marquis and I sometimes like to go and play badminton. Today, however, nobody else wanted to go. So we decided just to have a wee practice together. Except that the court hadn't been book, or so it turned out. So we wandered home.

There, the Marquis sorted out light brackets for our new bikes, and after a quick dinner, we cycled to the gym to get to our Pilates class, only to find that it had been cancelled. Hm...

Seeing as we suddenly had a lot of time to go and play in, we decided to inaugurate the bicycles. The weather was lovely, sunny and not too windy and what with it being the longest day of the year we didn't need our lights at all. We did a fair bit of cycling on some quiet back roads and then went off road and along the river, first in one direction, then across a bridge and back the other way to take us back towards home.

It was a really nice ride, but I hadn't cycled in so long, I kept worrying about losing my balance and falling over. At one point, when I was trying to cycle up a bank, I started to slide back down the hill, which was somewhat disconcerting, but luckily I managed to stop nettle-covered disaster in its tracks. :-) The Marquis roared like a drain as I waddled up the slope, pushing the bicycle between my legs.

But now, safely back at home, my buttocks hurt. I don't even what to think about how they'll feel tomorrow...
:-o

In other news, we bought a pair of binoculars at Aldi on Saturday -- they were only £7. I'm really pleased with them, because now I can actually see the seagull chick on the corrugated roof across from our house. They are very cute grey fluffy things.

Now I just need to get in the habit of dragging the bins around with me, in case I see that raven again that has been hanging around our area.

Have a happy solstice (as [livejournal.com profile] jane_somebody puts it...)

Today I returned from a fantabulous day at [livejournal.com profile] pellegrina. Even the 95-minute delay on the train home hasn't managed to dent my feeling of satisfaction...

So what did we actually do?

On Friday morning [livejournal.com profile] the_marquis and I spectacularly failed to missed out train to the South by about 30 seconds. Read more... ) Suffice it to say, we caught the next train without hitch, it got to our destination almost without delay, and for some reason known only unto those who plan the journeys of trains, it took an hour less to get from home to destination on this train, than it would have done on the ‘correct’ train.

[livejournal.com profile] parrot_knight picked us up at the station and while the Marquis dashed off to the building society, the Knight and I parked the car. We met up again a little later and had a cup of tea in a café that has opened in the place in which I bought my favourite pair of shoes (to date; now sadly deceased). Odd experience, that!

The rest of the evening… )

Saturday started fairly slowly, and once we’d made it into town, the Marquis had to rush off to the committee meeting of Society T’s big cousin. The Knight and I were charged with a quest for some latex for hobbit feet. We found some in the end…

Soon after the latex had been acquired the Knight and I also parted ways: he took [livejournal.com profile] foradan to his flat to help him sort out his computer, while I headed off to meet Viala and [livejournal.com profile] eudesia for a long afternoon of chatting. I also saw my godson, his little sister and his big brother in the process of the visit, which was rather nice!

Talking with Viala and Eudesia )

Then, in the evening, took place the event for which we had travelled more than half-way down the country: Society T’s Banquet )which was not only a great event in its own right, but also provided a chance for many of the old members of Society T to meet each other and for us all to meet our very worthy successors! Eglerio!

Sunday’s journey home was remarkably straightforward, despite the replacement bus service which the Marquis and I had been dreading as two people who were a little over-tired and delicate after the previous evening’s excesses ;-). Once at home, I quickly prepared the lecture-notes for tomorrow’s sessions in Lancaster. And then I spent ages writing up this report of the weekend. Time for posting and bed, methinks…

Every year I rant about the commercialisation of the institution – see Polly’s ([livejournal.com profile] jane_somebody) entry on VD for a précis of my usual ravings… And then I make sure I have a little something for the Marquis anyway.

So instead of buying a card this year, I decided that the only way of letting my little romantic know that I just don’t like the pressure VD puts on people, and that I am quite happy to do something special for him, was to make my own card for him and think of a prezzie of something he’d really like: I think he like the card, and the prezzie (model ships :-)).

He gave me a beautiful card with the watercolour of a curled up cat and a box of chocolates. And he went patiently around many shoe shops with me in Newcastle as I looked for the pair I’d seen yesterday in Carlisle, but which they hadn’t had in my size. If that’s not love, I don’t know what is! (Well, I do, but it sounds dramatic.)

Anyway, the shoes weren’t the only reason for the Newcastle trip: I felt desperate to get away from Carlisle for a day, and Newcastle is the nearest Big City. I liked what I saw and it felt very good to be in a big place with many different people and new buildings and shops and all sorts. Amongst other things, we popped into Forbidding Prices, too, and looked at some LotR merchandise (what tack!!! In some cases…).

Since we were unsuccessful in finding my shoes in Newcastle, we stopped at the Metrocentre (a strange, strange place) on the way home. I found my shoes, and we found the model shop, where the Marquis picked his models (see above) and bought me a tiny, tiny tri-plane (Fokker DR 1).

Anyway, it’s been a good day, mainly, because it has been so different. And I don’t have to work tomorrow. Yay!

Happy Valentine’s Day all!
