It's just a sticking plaster )

And yet...
- Na'Quis's sports day: the weather was mostly good (I even got a little sunburnt), Na'Quis was proud of her achievements ("I can run really fast!"), and I'm proud of her for going and doing it, even though she'd missed preparing for sports day with her fellow pupils.
- The Marquis and I put up the garden table, and then I spent about two hours cleaning garden furniture and partly cleaning up the shed, until the dust got to me.
- I took Na'Quis with me to a singing lesson. She wants to have her own and I am going to start again. My singing teacher has a new singing room in her garden: it is fantastic. I want one. ;-)
- Just as the sun was setting it peeked out behind the cloud and made the apple blossom on our neighbours tree look the most glorious luminescent pink. It made me want to learn to paint, because on a photo I can never capture that kind of light.
- I can hear the sound of the rain on the patio. The plants will appreciate the water and I like the sound.

Sometimes it seems that all I post lately is diversionary stuff. I have a huge backlog of things I want to write up, as well as an even huger backlog in reading my flist. But the new academic year policy is not to lj at work (except for the occasional comment), because I have a LOT of teaching in the first semester. I don't feel resentful about having made this decision: work has been going pretty well so far.

Anyway, in the spirit of helping myself get some of the things I wanted/needed to get done done, I wrote myself a massive list of things to do - not just things that can simply be ticked off completely (e.g. I include such items as 'read stuff for me'). The idea here is to try and do at least one of the things on the list every day. It's been quite useful so far, because it makes me realise that I don't just waste all of my time, but that I do get some things done.

Near the top of the list is the laundry, and while the Marquis's uniform trousers go through the washing machine, I have stay at home before going to work. So I thought I'd use this time to write myself another list.

Dampness

It's raining today. So my knees were right last night with their soreness -- they usually get sore when there is a change in atmospheric pressure, which is not good for someone living in England. :-|

Initially I was wondering if Tuemi and friend had packed the good weather up in their suitcases, but they claim not -- too much other stuff. I saw them off to the station earlier on. Sad to see them go, but also nice to get back to sorting out the house some more.

In fact the sorting out that needs to be done encompasses some fairly major problem resolution. While Tuemi and friend were visiting, we discovered that our shower leaks into the kitchen. Yesterday the Marquis decided to investigate. He took the side of the bath and discovered that 12kg (about 24lb) of wet plaster had fallen off the wall behind the bath and lain wetly on top of the floor board, which had begun to rot underneath its damp load. The Marquis shovelled out the dirt and went online to investigate what was to be done about wet-rot... Now we just have to hope that the Land People respond soon to our email.

I was going to inaugurate my nice new birthday brolly -- a huge contraption with photos of Nuremberg all over it -- but I forgot it in the house and am having to make do with my little fold-up umbrella that I usually cart around with me. *shrugs*

Wallet!

I managed to acquire a nice turquoise wallet today.

Oh, and a T-shirt in the sales. The former was a planned buy, the latter a bit of impromptu retail therapy, cos I have been feeling low.

When I got home, I decided to do some prep for the move and ended up semi-cataloguing all of our videos and DVDs in this little index book I found. Just the ones recorded of the TV to do now. That'll probably take longer than all the rest put together.

While I monopolise the internet connection and phoneline in our house, the Marquis often plays a computer game called Diablo, which is a sort of 'Buffy goes to the Hellmouth to give the demons some trouble'+ D&D type of game. He's been playing this rogue character called Xenatu for the last several weeks, but today decided to start a new character. A warrior in fact. I suggested he call him Fred, and the Marquis called him Fred. And I am absurdly pleased again, which is -- as Polly remarked -- something one should be more often.

Na'Lon's Sunday )

Because of the disgustingly early start this morning, I feel that I have had quite a good day, really. The lecture was done before the sun had set -- it's setting noticeable later now! Yay!

The Marquis and I went for an itty-bitty walk around the park and took a look at some of the flooding there in one of the bits that's 'land-locked' but as low as the river. It's cold again, so we didn't stay out too long. We we came back in, the Marquis made us hot chocolate and we watched Time Team. While we did this, I spent some time sorting through some long overdue paperwork and banking. Feel virtuous now...

Told my Dad about this lj today -- hi, G'Lon, in case you are reading this! He called to say thanks for the translation work. :-)
