Well, there I was, doctoring an image for my sister when out went the electricity. So [livejournal.com profile] the_marquis and I went and found candles and made dinner. :-)

Berry brought over her banana cake from next door to finish cooking. Her cooker (though gas powered) is so smart, it can't cook without electricity. Ours can be tricked into compliance.

Powercuts are very humbling. I think I'll find out about donating some more money to the Pakistan Earthquake aide... :-(

Back home

We got home earlier on today and had a fairly event free trip. We've already been shopping for some food for today and tomorrow. We have also unpacked. I have a mountain of laundry to do and it's cold in the house, but it's nice to be back.

My parents set off for Germany again this morning. We've had a nice week and got quite a few things done around house and garden.

I am now behind with almost everything else, including lj reading.

But hey, instead of catching up, the Marquis and I are going to visit Third and Chairman tonight, to go to the Re-enactors' Fair tomorrow.

Work on Sunday.

I have finally completed the fourth lecture for next week. At least I'll be able to take tomorrow off from work!

I have even managed to have a bit of fun today, although I was none too impressed by the posty showing up at 8am with something to be signed for. Especially not after having watched TV until late last night (a thing on Blues in Britain). I spent most of the morning reading Barrayar, since I didn't manage to fall asleep again post posty. More or less from noon onwards, I have been working. After the first lecture was half-written, the computer crashed. So I grabbed a quick shower and then got back down to it. When it was completed, I had lunch and a break for some knitting and listening to music. Then back down to work. The next session was done by about 5 p.m. During this break I called my father and chatted to him for a long time. We don't often chat, so it was especially nice. Then more work, with nowt but a quick break to defrost some dinner and discover that the bread was mouldy.

I also did lots of laundry throughout the day. Still got some to hang up, after this.

But at least the Marquis will be back soon.

Dampness

It's raining today. So my knees were right last night with their soreness -- they usually get sore when there is a change in atmospheric pressure, which is not good for someone living in England. :-|

Initially I was wondering if Tuemi and friend had packed the good weather up in their suitcases, but they claim not -- too much other stuff. I saw them off to the station earlier on. Sad to see them go, but also nice to get back to sorting out the house some more.

In fact the sorting out that needs to be done encompasses some fairly major problem resolution. While Tuemi and friend were visiting, we discovered that our shower leaks into the kitchen. Yesterday the Marquis decided to investigate. He took the side of the bath and discovered that 12kg (about 24lb) of wet plaster had fallen off the wall behind the bath and lain wetly on top of the floor board, which had begun to rot underneath its damp load. The Marquis shovelled out the dirt and went online to investigate what was to be done about wet-rot... Now we just have to hope that the Land People respond soon to our email.

I was going to inaugurate my nice new birthday brolly -- a huge contraption with photos of Nuremberg all over it -- but I forgot it in the house and am having to make do with my little fold-up umbrella that I usually cart around with me. *shrugs*

... here's a very brief hello.

Hello, lj, have been neglecting you, as well as my website (still under construction) and various friends. Been really busy, what with moving house, having my mum and aunt to visit, going to the Fellowship Festival, starting a new job and getting visited by my sister Tuemi and her friend. I was going to update my lj yesterday, but the laundry needed doing and the weather was very nice and I made use of our new garden.

Anyway, I'll fill in the details bit by bit, but for the moment I'd better get on with some work.

*waves and signs off*

While I monopolise the internet connection and phoneline in our house, the Marquis often plays a computer game called Diablo, which is a sort of 'Buffy goes to the Hellmouth to give the demons some trouble'+ D&D type of game. He's been playing this rogue character called Xenatu for the last several weeks, but today decided to start a new character. A warrior in fact. I suggested he call him Fred, and the Marquis called him Fred. And I am absurdly pleased again, which is -- as Polly remarked -- something one should be more often.

Not that much of it is left.

I have spent far too much time on the phone this weekend, while the Marquis was away on TS business. I spoke to Viala, Malaheed, Pellegrina (2x) and to Alitophilus (2x but one time was short). Most of it was game and writing talk but some it was also good ol' fashioned gossip. :-)

Apart from that I did so much laundry I have almost managed to catch up with my backlog. Except now I have to wait for some of it to dry.

I also added tat, chi, tsu, te, to, na, ni, nu, ne, and no to my collection of Hirigana. I can therefore now write Tsusuki (Tatsumi will have to wait) in Hiragana, and Osaka, and Kana. But I am also helplessly confused now. I can usually write them all if I keep them in the correct order, but the moment I try to adlib, about half of them disappear from my brain. But hey, perseverance....

I have earlier edited Chapter 2 of my and Pellegrina's WiP -- it still needs input from Pellegrina, but we are getting closer to the completion of the chapter, despite being at opposite ends of the country. We've also started a new emither ("Midnight Snack"). I have the first bit in my inbox (not read yet at time of writing this) -- really looking forward to this one, but I think it is going to be a toughy...

Dinner was one of the two frozen meals that Parrot Knight gave us as a gift last time he was here visiting. It was very yummy. Thank you, Sir Knight.

Time to post this and read my emither...

It turns out you can train Cuban crocodiles much in the same way you can train a dog. The dragon in me is pleased with this discovery. But crocs are probably a bit more dangerous than dogs nevertheless.

100 things

Because I've been suffering from a particularly vicious bout of 'can't be bothered' over the last few days (marking has this effect on me...), I decided that something had to be done this weekend. Something proactive.

So I made a deal with my self to get 100 things done yesterday. Not major things, just little bits and bobs. So tidying away one item counts as a thing, or putting a load of washing in the machine.

In the end I managed to get done a few more than 100 things, but I stopped counting after 100. Amongst other things, I fixed my holsters, did my handwashing, the regular laundry, tidied the Christmas decorations (!) into their box in such a way that the box now closes, caught up my diary, and tidied up a few things.

Didn't get the work I originally intended to do today done, because I was too tired and didn't feel in the mood.

Today went past in a laundry filled blur and with some good emithering, and even some actual work on my story. That said I am semi-stuck again. I know what I want to use the current scene for but am in danger of it turning into info dump. Hm. I know there's going to be a way around it. I'll just have to leave it for the moment and hope that inspiration strikes when I next look at it.

(There -- you happier now, TK?)

( Yes, thank you kindly. -- TK )

You need electricity for it...

Went for our walk as planned and thought of [livejournal.com profile] beckyc up a fell!

Completely exhausted when we got back -- and feeling pathetic at my level of unfitness -- I napped on the sheepskin in the livingroom, while the Marquis did similarly in the bedroom. We both woke right on time for Time Team, one of our favourite TV programs, which promised to be particularly good, but... there was a powercut! One of the amusingly long variety, which lasted for about two hours. It really brought home how much we depend on 'lectricity in our little house here: can't cook without it, or update lj or email friends or watch DVDs... [grins].

Out came the candles, and I used the time to update my paper journal which I hadn't written since last weekend. Then I read some LotR to the Marquis -- the bit where Aragorn rides back to Dunharrow to take the Paths of the Dead and speaks there with Eowyn.

LotR Dramatic reading wittering )

Anyway, since we've got power back now, it's time to sort out some sort of dinner, do some ironing and go to watch Midsomer Murders on TV -- today's guess on body count: 3. Will tell you after if I got it right... :-)

Isn't that absurd. I can't think of a title for my update, but I want there to be one, so I make one up that means nowt. But, heck, why shouldn't I? Today's entry is mostly inane, but read if you wish...

Don't say I didn't warn yer! )

Hm. I still haven't got round to starting to learn javascript and I haven't personalised my lj yet.

But, I have hoovered the house and done some laundry (oops, some needs fetching out of the dryer, I think!).

Parrot Knight is currently visiting and we're going to get a curry for dinner.

And to top of this random ramble with another unconnected thought:

Welcome, Pellegrina. It was the Explorers that gave it away, as well as the pretty bird. (I will have to get myself a piccy, too, methinks.)

Not really, but I have made myself a list of things to do for the day...

Did the washing up already, and put some laundry in, and finished a vignette I have been writing.

The next plan is for me to write down all the things I can put on my CV to sell myself as well as possible to this job I really, really want. More of this at another time.

Anyway, gotta go get some things done.
