GIP!

I have been wondering what else I could use as an icon for me and the Marquis suggested otters. Here's one. :-)

So I didn't get much at all of what I had intended done today, but the Marquis and I went foodshopping and spent lots of money at the second-hand bookshop which is MUCH bigger than I'd realised. It has catacombs full of sheet music amongst other things.

Did lots of emithering with Pellegrina -- we are sort of nearing an end of 'Midnight snack', where 'sort of' is the operative word. But hey, we're having fun.

There was also summat else un-related to Pellegrina's and my writing that I had to write and send off today to meet a deadline. I managed to cobble something okay together, but it's not one of my most sparkley offerings.

Oh yes, and Pellegrina and I did our weekly stint on the phone to each other. It's so nice to talk about such varied topics and ideas. I almost always feel invigorated by our chats, except when we're both of us mopey, when it just feels nice to know that someone else cares, too.

The Marquis and I had the last bottle of the Norman cidre we bought at the food fair at Easter tonight. It was very nice and very bubbly -- nearly uncorked itself. Pity we will miss the next food fair, as we'll have moved to Wolves by then...

New Watch

It is now one minute past eight, I am pleased to be able to inform you. :-)

My usual watch -- the good old reliable stainless steel Citizen that I have been given as a gift from my granny 'Nari -- suffered a minor setback on Tuesday, when its strap packed in in such a way as not to be repairable. Of course.
The Marquis went and checked it out at the Watch Hospital.

So today I decided to go and buy a new strap for it, but not leather: it had to be one of those sprung metal ones. I like those. But the only ones small enough that they had at the Watch Hospital I didn't like -- I just wanted a plain one. Fortunately they can be ordered.

But since I have been spending some time wondering what exactly it is I am earning money for, I had earlier in the day decided that I wanted to have a second watch. This feels like the ultimate luxury to me :-). But I figured since I hardly ever wear any jewellery beyond my piratical gold earring and my wedding band, a pretty watch (in gold-colouring) was exactly what I wanted to have earned some money for. I found a nice pretty and elegant watch (by Citizen again, so it happens) and went for it!

It is now eight minutes past eight.

I love my new watch! (But am also looking forward to get my old one back soon...)

Okay, so it's about 20 to eleven, and I have wet hair and so need to stay up a little longer if I want to avoid the evil hair-dryer (which make my hair frizzy), but I am tired.

What I really want to do is sit down and start writing the beginning of Ch. 3 of GoN-WiP, 'cos I finally had an idea about how to get it started, but since I am also tired and want to updat my lj, I'll start with that.

Today, then... today's been one of those days for me as well as [livejournal.com profile] pellegrina although in different ways )

It turns out you can train Cuban crocodiles much in the same way you can train a dog. The dragon in me is pleased with this discovery. But crocs are probably a bit more dangerous than dogs nevertheless.

100 things

Because I've been suffering from a particularly vicious bout of 'can't be bothered' over the last few days (marking has this effect on me...), I decided that something had to be done this weekend. Something proactive.

So I made a deal with my self to get 100 things done yesterday. Not major things, just little bits and bobs. So tidying away one item counts as a thing, or putting a load of washing in the machine.

In the end I managed to get done a few more than 100 things, but I stopped counting after 100. Amongst other things, I fixed my holsters, did my handwashing, the regular laundry, tidied the Christmas decorations (!) into their box in such a way that the box now closes, caught up my diary, and tidied up a few things.

Wombie

Two of our friends have a cuddly wombat they bought in Australia. His name is Werriby.

The other day the Marquis and I were coming home from somewhere and somehow, I can't remember how, the conversation turned to Werriby.

The Marquis says: "You mean the wombie?"

?!? A wombie? Is that an undead wombat?

... about what I could write an entry about. I feel like making an entry, but don't particularly feel that I have anything pertinent to say... But heck... the subtitle to this Journal is 'inane ramblings'.

Been being quite slack this last week. Deliberately, in a sort of experiment not to get too wound up by things. It's kind of in keeping with odd lenten fast this year. I decided to give up ranting about certain things that annoy me. I haven't entirely managed, but I have been more or less keeping to it. (Quite please about that).

The one thing that I haven't been slack about is the obsessive-compulsive bout of B5 game fic writing that I have been engaged in over the last couple of weeks. I've worked quite hard on this and enjoyed writing most of it. Been on and off the phone to Pellegrina about some of this writing, cause it was sparked off by our joint project.

Tonight, however, I'll have to actually get some comments written on the now marked pieces of student work that have been the bane of my existence for the last couple of weeks. Sigh... I'd rather continue with some of the writing. Maybe when I have done some comments???

Every year I rant about the commercialisation of the institution – see Polly’s ([livejournal.com profile] jane_somebody) entry on VD for a précis of my usual ravings… And then I make sure I have a little something for the Marquis anyway.

So instead of buying a card this year, I decided that the only way of letting my little romantic know that I just don’t like the pressure VD puts on people, and that I am quite happy to do something special for him, was to make my own card for him and think of a prezzie of something he’d really like: I think he like the card, and the prezzie (model ships :-)).

He gave me a beautiful card with the watercolour of a curled up cat and a box of chocolates. And he went patiently around many shoe shops with me in Newcastle as I looked for the pair I’d seen yesterday in Carlisle, but which they hadn’t had in my size. If that’s not love, I don’t know what is! (Well, I do, but it sounds dramatic.)

Anyway, the shoes weren’t the only reason for the Newcastle trip: I felt desperate to get away from Carlisle for a day, and Newcastle is the nearest Big City. I liked what I saw and it felt very good to be in a big place with many different people and new buildings and shops and all sorts. Amongst other things, we popped into Forbidding Prices, too, and looked at some LotR merchandise (what tack!!! In some cases…).

Since we were unsuccessful in finding my shoes in Newcastle, we stopped at the Metrocentre (a strange, strange place) on the way home. I found my shoes, and we found the model shop, where the Marquis picked his models (see above) and bought me a tiny, tiny tri-plane (Fokker DR 1).

Anyway, it’s been a good day, mainly, because it has been so different. And I don’t have to work tomorrow. Yay!

Happy Valentine’s Day all!

Isn't that absurd. I can't think of a title for my update, but I want there to be one, so I make one up that means nowt. But, heck, why shouldn't I? Today's entry is mostly inane, but read if you wish...

Don't say I didn't warn yer! )

I don't believe in astrology, but... yesterday Penny reappeared in my life, today Ta'Neth (not someone any of you potential readers have met, but someone very dear to me) and also Khazad. And the Marquis and I finally went out for the long, long planned drink with Marxist...

Tomorrow, I will write many emails, I think, and maybe write some more journal stuff.

But tonight, I am heading to bed.

But before I do, I felt very chuffed to find that [livejournal.com profile] beckyc added me to her friends list :-)

G'night all...

Well, there you are. That was going to be the title of what I typed up over the last half hour, and then I bloody went and lost it, didn't I? Sometimes I hate computers! With pen and paper you can usually still find the stuff. Not so if you stupidly get distracted because you are too tired to think.

Originally I wrote a fairly long bit about the essay I just finished and how I'd enjoyed it but wished I'd had more time to do reading for it, and how that made me slightly more sympathetic towards my students' dilemmas.

I also wrote up some of my thoughts about slash, sparked off by the discussion on the Soapy Place, where I didn't feel like commenting.

Anyway. Now I have restored a bit of what I originally typed, at least I might get round to editing this with a bit more detail when I feel more human...

Today's entry is some rambly insanity, as usual and so I'll park it sideways, as it were. That way I won't take up too much space on my friends' screens... This really is about coursework assignments. It also is about what I have to do over the weekend and some burbling...

Not really, but I have made myself a list of things to do for the day...

Did the washing up already, and put some laundry in, and finished a vignette I have been writing.

The next plan is for me to write down all the things I can put on my CV to sell myself as well as possible to this job I really, really want. More of this at another time.

Anyway, gotta go get some things done.

After some slightly less than strenuous persuasion (I didn't need that much!) from my Evil Twin, I have finally got round to getting myself a livejournal. The Marquis thinks I will now never get anything published, but I am confident that at least the paper that I have in preparation should be ready to go off once I have got rid of this cold/sinus-thing, yuk!

Anyway, it cold here, and I have to wear gloves at the keyboard to prevent my fingers from turning blue, so I won't sped too much time on this entry.

Gonna go explore!
